I'm sitting down here in disgust because I just broke a string on my piano. It's not like a string on a violin or guitar where it's only a few dollars to change them and I could do it myself, with a piano I have to call a tuner and have all new strings put in and have it tuned several times to the tune (unintended) of several hundred dollars, maybe much more. I could have the tuner replace just the broken string but it would always sound different and it would absolutely drive me crazy to play it. It's a low G string, not like a note I rarely use or anything it's one I use every song.
My piano is only 50 years old and it's in good shape, a little Baldwin spinet, I will grant that I play that little spinet like a 9 foot grand piano, spinets don't seem to have the guts of a real piano so I put every ounce of oomph I can possibly get from my fingers and arms when I play big songs, sometimes my fingers bleed, I always leave the piano exhausted (a good exhausted) and I know I am giving the little old piano the workout of it's life but it doesn't have to break like that! I guess they were made for nice quiet songs and slow hymns but I absolutely can't play songs like "How Great Thou Art" or "Great is the Lord" quiet and soft. It's got to start calm and contained and then when moving to the chorus absolutely break out of the box and explode with sound and energy. Evidently I will be shopping for a new piano, one that can take what I dish out and that maybe has the volume and guts to give what I want out of it. More money to spend I guess, Oh well.
With the recent snow and resulting mud things around here are slowing down. Time now for indoor things like woodworking, reading, and actually cooking a decent dinner, which I will now go do.
